An Arm Lift can Restore Your Youthful, Defined Arms
An arm lift, also known as brachioplasty, reshapes the under portion of the upper arm, from the underarm region to the elbow. The surgery tightens loose, hanging skin by removing excess skin and fat that often creates a “bat wing” appearance under the arm. Although you can improve your upper arm appearance with exercise, this condition cannot be corrected through exercise. Each year thousands of people undergo this common procedure with successful and pleasing results, and Dr. Bharat Shah can perform a successful arm lift at his Springfield, MO, office.
Are you a candidate for an upper arm lift?
- You have significant upper arm skin laxity
- You hesitate on wearing fitted or sleeveless shirts
- You are willing to trade a visible scar for a smooth underarm
- You have localized pockets of fat prevalent in the upper arm region
- Fluctuations in your weight have caused your upper arms to have a drooping, sagging appearance
- Your weight is normal but your shape is marred by underarm laxity due to natural aging or heredity
If you are in good health, poise a positive attitude and realistic expectations, then you are most likely a good candidate for this procedure.
If there are additional fat deposits in upper arms then Dr. Shah may recommend liposuction in addition to an arm lift for a more pleasing overall arm contour and shape. Adjunct procedures may be necessary to achieve your goals.
During your initial consultation, Dr. Shah will take a complete medical history and examine the areas of concern in advance of planning your arm lift. You will be asked about your desired arm size and appearance and any other medical considerations. Dr. Shah will factor in your skin tone, degree of loose skin and amount of fat.
This process will help Dr. Shah to better understand your expectations and determine whether they can be realistically achieved. Then, this information will be used to formulate a surgical plan that will obtain the best outcome based on the discussed goals of the procedure. Dr. Shah will select the surgical technique that will offer the lowest risk with maximum results. Both Dr. Shah and his staff will thoroughly explain the surgical technique and answer any questions on the procedure.
Overview of the Procedure
Your arm lift surgery will be performed in one of our fully accredited surgical facilities. The procedure takes 1 to 3 hours to complete. You will need to make arrangements to have a family member or friend drive you to and from the surgery center and care for you during the first 24 hours after surgery.
The options for the incision location will be determined by the extent of excess underarm fat and skin to be removed. Dr. Shah will determine the incision length based on your anatomy. Incisions are generally placed on the inside of the arm and may extend from the underarm to just above the elbow. The underlying supportive tissue is tightened and reshaped with internal sutures and the skin is then smoothed over the new contour of the arm.
You will retain scars that are visible along the arm. Although incision lines are permanent, in most cases they will fade and significantly improve over time.
Arm Lift Recovery
After your arm lift surgery, you will experience temporary bruising, swelling, and some discomfort and tightness for the first two weeks. The incisions are closed with stitches and the arms are bandaged for comfort and support during recovery. A special support garment will need to be worn to aid recovery. You will be up and moving around the day of your surgery. You are not on bed rest. Most people return to work in 2 to 3 weeks after the procedure. You will have a 5 lb. weight restriction for 4 weeks after surgery. You may begin non-impact exercise 2 weeks after surgery (walking on the treadmill, low-speed elliptical). You may begin light upper body weight lifting 4-6 weeks after surgery.
Dr. Shah and his staff will closely monitor your progress by providing specific postoperative care instructions and schedule a follow up visit to the office to ensure a smooth healing and recovery.
