Are You a Candidate for Liposuction?
Liposuction slims and sculpts specific areas of the body by eliminating unwanted pockets of exercise and diet-resistant fat. The available liposuction techniques create dramatic and immediate end results. By reshaping curves and improving body contours, liposuction is one of the safest and most popular cosmetic procedures.
Liposuction techniques may be used to reduce localized fat deposits in common areas, such as:
- Cheeks, chin and neck
- Upper arms
- Calves and ankles
For women, the most frequently treated areas include:
- Hips and buttocks
- Abdomen and waist
- Inner knees
For men, the most frequently treated areas include:
- Abdomen and waist “love handles”
- Chin and neckline
Are you a candidate for a Liposuction?
The best candidates for liposuction are those who:
- Have fat deposits that don’t respond to diet, exercise, and weight loss
- Are bothered by areas of excess fat
- Have localized deposits of fat in your abdomen, arms, thighs, neck and/or other areas which may be the result of heredity
- Lack body symmetry due to resistant fat deposits
- Have a minimal amount of excess skin and good skin elasticity
- Are at their desired weight
- Are in good health, have a positive outlook and specific goals in mind for body contouring
Top 3 advantages of Liposuction:
- Will make your clothes fit better and your body appear slimmer
- Uses small incisions resulting in smaller scars
- Can be done under sedation with less risks and shorter operating times
Liposuction can be performed alone or along with other plastic surgery procedures, such as a facelift, breast reduction or a tummy tuck. During your consultation, Dr. Shah may recommend other procedures in addition to liposuction for a more pleasing overall body contour. Adjunct procedures may be necessary to achieve your goals.
During your initial consultation, Dr. Shah will take a complete medical history and examine the areas of concern in advance of planning your liposuction surgery. You will be asked about your desired size and appearance for the areas of concern and any other medical considerations. Dr. Shah will factor in your skin tone, degree of loose skin and amount of fat.
This process will help Dr. Shah to better understand your expectations and determine whether they can be realistically achieved. Then, this information will be used to formulate a surgical plan that will obtain the best outcome based on the discussed goals of the procedure. Dr. Shah will select the surgical technique that will offer the lowest risk with maximum results. Both Dr. Shah and his staff will thoroughly explain the surgical technique and answer any questions on the procedure.
Overview of the Procedure
Your liposuction surgery will be performed in one of our fully accredited surgical facilities. The procedure takes 1 to 2 hours to complete. You will need to make arrangements to have a family member or friend drive you to and from the surgery center and care for you during the first 24 hours after surgery.
What is surgery like?
Dr. Shah will do all of his markings before the procedure indicating the areas of concern. You will either undergo general anesthesia or IV sedation depending on the type of liposuction and the areas involved. After you are relaxed, Dr. Shah will infiltrate a tumescent solution into the treatment area. This solution is composed of saline with local anesthetic and epinephrine. This helps constrict or shrink down the blood vessels which helps to minimize bleeding and bruising. It also helps with pain control both during and after the procedure. Dr. Shah will then make a tiny puncture in the skin and insert the liposuction cannula. The cannula looks like a small wand, which he will move back and forth beneath the skin to target unwanted fat deposits which is then suctioned out.
The acronym SAFE liposuction stands for fat Separation, fat Aspiration, and Fat Equalization. This term designates a specific liposuction technique that can lead to a more pleasing postoperative contour especially for treatment on the torso and thighs. This technique is also a very helpful adjunct for contour correction in secondary liposuction procedures.
Liposuction requires a few small incisions, some of which are hidden along the umbilicus; however, there are some incisions that are still visible. Although the scars from these incisions are permanent, in most cases they will fade and significantly improve over time. Dr. Shah and his staff will help you take care of your scars to have the best result possible.
After your liposuction surgery, stitches and steri-strips are placed over the incisions. With all liposuction procedures you will need to wear a compression garment for 2 weeks after surgery to aid in healing, comfort and support during your recovery. A compression garment will be provided by Dr. Shah and his staff. After 2 weeks it is still encouraged to wear a compression garment (i.e. Spanx, Under Armour) for another 2 weeks (4 weeks total after your surgery) to help achieve the best results. You will be up and moving around the day of your procedure to speed healing. You will have a 20 lb. weight restriction for 2 weeks after surgery. You will be able to resume normal activities 2 weeks after your procedure. It is recommended to start slow and gradually work up to your normal exercise routine.
Dr. Shah and his staff will closely monitor your progress by providing specific postoperative care instructions and schedule a follow up visit to the office to ensure a smooth healing and recovery.
When will you see results?
You’ll see immediate results once the swelling subsides. Dramatic contour improvements will be revealed over the next 2 to 4 months as your curves become shapelier leading to the desired new normal. By eating a healthy diet with regular exercise, you should be able to maintain your new harmonious look.
