Redefine Your Contours with
Chin Augmentation

Chin augmentation, also known as mentoplasty, involves reshaping the chin either by enhancement with an implant or reduction surgery on the bone to improve the balance of the facial profile. Improving the shape of the chin has a remarkable influence on the overall appearance of the face, nose, and neck.

Balancing & Enhancing | Advantages of Chin Augmentation

Chin augmentation creates a well defined chin to help give balance to the face among other advantages, as follows:

  • Strengthens the appearance of a receding chin or correct a “weak” chin
  • Permanent solution to achieve a strong chin as opposed to temporary soft tissue fillers
  • Procedure is relatively straightforward and makes a big difference in improving facial contour
  • Improve sagging neck skin that is over emphasized by a “weak” chin
  • Feel better about the way you look with a harmonious balance to your facial features
  • May easily be performed with other procedures
  • Complements nose reshaping when nose surgery is recommended in order to achieve facial proportion, as the size of the chin may magnify or minimize the perceived size of the nose

Your Consultation

During your initial consultation, Dr. Shah will take a complete medical history and examine the areas of concern in advance of planning your chin augmentation.  You may be asked to look in a mirror and point out exactly what you would like to see enhanced and improved upon.  This process will help Dr. Shah to better understand your expectations and determine whether they can be realistically achieved. Then, this information will be used to formulate a surgical plan that will obtain the best outcome based on the discussed goals of the procedure.  Dr. Shah will select the surgical technique that will offer the lowest risk with maximum results.  Both Dr. Shah and his staff will thoroughly explain the surgical technique and answer any questions on the procedure.

Overview of the Procedure

Your chin surgery will be performed in our fully accredited surgical facilities. As with any surgery, you should be of good health with a normally functioning immune system.  Chin augmentation with implants is the preferred procedure for most patients with normally functioning teeth and jaw development.

To augment (enlarge) the chin, Dr. Shah will make small incisions either in the natural crease line underneath the chin or inside the mouth where the gum and lower lip meet. By gently stretching this tissue, Dr. Shah creates a space where a custom fit implant can be inserted.  With the hidden incisions, scarring is either unperceivable or not visible. In chin reduction surgery, the same type of small incisions is performed then the bone is sculpted to a more pleasing size and shape.  Usually the surgery takes less than an hour to complete, unless other procedures are being performed in addition to chin surgery.

Your Recovery

Following the surgery, Dr. Shah will apply dressing that will remain in place for 2 to 3 days. You will experience some tenderness. Patients tend to feel a stretched, tight sensation following surgery, but this usually subsides in a week. Chewing will be limited after surgery, and a liquid and soft food diet may be required for a few days.

Most swelling will be gone after approximately 6 weeks. Normal activity can be resumed after approximately 10 days; whereas, rigorous activity including exercise may be prohibited for the first 3 weeks after surgery.

Dr. Shah and his staff will closely monitor your progress by providing specific postoperative care instructions and schedule a follow up visit to the office to ensure a smooth healing and recovery. Elevation of the head and cold compresses is imperative to minimize post-operative swelling and promote healing.
