Blepharoplasty: Eyelid Surgery to Revitalize Your Appearance
Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) improves the appearance of the upper eyelids, lower eyelids, or both, revitalizing the appearance to the surrounding area of your eyes, making you look more rested and alert.
What are treatable conditions?
- Bags under the eyes that make you look worn and tired
- Excess fatty deposits that appear as puffiness in the upper eyelids
- Excess skin and fine wrinkles of the lower eyelid
- Droopiness of the lower eyelids
- Loose or sagging skin that creates folds or disturbs the natural contour of the upper eyelid, sometimes impairing vision
During your initial consultation, Dr. Shah will take a complete medical history and examine the areas of concern in advance of planning your eyelift. Dr. Shah will evaluate your eyelids for areas needing improvement based on skin thickness, texture and elasticity along with the severity of the wrinkles. Then, this information will be used to formulate a surgical plan that will obtain the best outcome based on the discussed goals of the procedure. Dr. Shah will select the surgical technique that will offer the lowest risk with maximum results. Both Dr. Shah and his staff will thoroughly explain the surgical technique and answer any questions on the procedure.
Overview of the Procedure
Your eyelid surgery will be performed in our fully accredited surgical facilities. In upper eyelid surgery, Dr. Shah will first mark the individual lines and creases of the lids within the natural folds of the eyelids in order to keep the scars as invisible as possible. The incision is made, and excess fat, muscle and loose skin are removed. Fine sutures are used to close the incisions, minimizing the visibility of any scarring.
In lower eyelid surgery, the incision is made in an inconspicuous site along the lash line and smile creases of the lower lid. Through this incision, excess fat, muscle, and skin are trimmed and removed, or fat may be reduced or redistributed to eliminate puffiness or bulges. The incision is closed with fine sutures.
Cosmetic eyelid surgery takes between 1 to 3 hours depending on the extent of the surgery. You will need to plan for a close friend or family member drive you to and from your surgery and care for you during the first 24 hours after surgery.
For a week or so following blepharoplasty, you will be instructed to clean the eye area daily. The eyes may feel sticky, dry, and itchy for a short time thereby eye drops may be recommended. Cold compresses and head elevation on two or three pillows will help minimize swelling and bruising. Self-absorbing sutures will dissolve on their own.
Dr. Shah and his staff will closely monitor your progress by providing specific postoperative care instructions and schedule a follow up visit to the office to ensure a smooth healing and recovery. Recovery from eyelid surgery is generally rapid and uneventful with most patients returning to work in 5 to 7 days. Normal activities can resume in about 2 weeks.
