Rhinoplasty Provides Your Best Facial Profile
Each year, half a million people seek consultation to enhance the appearance and functionality of their nose. Nose reshaping (rhinoplasty) often referenced as a “nose job” is designed to reshape a nose to reduce or improve its size, change the shape, or restore an injured nose. Ultimately, people want to improve the appearance and proportion of their nose to enhance the overall facial symmetry. On the functional side, nose surgery can correct impaired breathing caused by structural abnormalities in the nose (septoplasty).
By virtue of the central position of the nose, it is the most distinctive and defining characteristic of your face. Even with aging your nose may grow, prompting the notion of being mistaken as older than you actually are thereby altering self-confidence. Nose reshaping can achieve the appearance goals and improve functionality for you, as follows:
- Reduce or increase the nose size that appears disproportionate to the face
- Modify nostril size and shape – common are excessively flared nostrils
- Correct imperfections due to injuries causing an asymmetrical nose
- Eliminate the “bump” on the nasal bridge when viewed in profile
- Alter the shape of the nasal tip that can droop or plunge
- Modify the angle between your nose and upper lip
- Fix a crooked or off-centered nose
- Relieve breathing problems
- Correct a birth defect
Restore your own defining distinction at any age by being exactly you!
During your initial consultation, Dr. Shah will take a complete medical history and examine the areas of concern in advance of planning your nose reshaping. You may be asked to look in a mirror and point out exactly what you would like to see enhanced and improved upon. This process will help Dr. Shah to better understand your expectations and determine whether they can be realistically achieved. Then, this information will be used to formulate a surgical plan that will obtain the best outcome based on the discussed goals of the procedure. Dr. Shah will select the surgical technique that will offer the lowest risk with maximum results. Both Dr. Shah and his staff will thoroughly explain the surgical technique and answer any questions on the procedure.
Overview of the Procedure
Your nose surgery will be performed in our fully accredited surgical facilities. Dr. Shah recommends that patients wait until they are at least 14 years of age or older before undergoing nose surgery to confirm that the nose is fully developed. And as long as you are of good health, there is no upper age limit for having your nose reshaped.
Generally, the nose reshaping technique first involves accessing the bone and cartilage support of the nose. The majority of incisions are placed inside your nose, where they are not visible. At times, a short incision is made across the vertical strip of tissue separating the nostrils, called the columella. Then, the underlying bone and cartilage is reduced, augmented or rearranged to create the newly shaped structure according to your desired goals. The tissues are then redraped over the new frame and the incisions are hidden in the natural crease where the nostril joins the cheek. A nose splint is applied to the outside of the nose to minimize swelling and maintain its new shape during the healing process. Soft, absorbent material may be placed inside the nose to maintain stability and support nasal air passages.
Your face will feel puffy the first day after surgery. Swelling and bruising around the eyes is common during the first week. The swelling begins to subside 2 – 5 days after surgery. Absorbable sutures are typically used inside the nose and do not need removal. Nasal dressings and splints are removed one week or more after surgery. Most people return to work within 7 to 10 days after surgery. You will be able to resume normal activities including exercise usually within three weeks.
Dr. Shah and his staff will closely monitor your progress by providing specific postoperative care instructions and schedule a follow up visit to the office to ensure a smooth healing and recovery. Elevation of the head, cold compresses and not blowing your nose is imperative to minimize post-operative swelling and promote healing. If you wear glasses, caution is advised to not exert excess pressure on the bridge of the nose. Tape or other devices may be used to permit wearing glasses without stressing the nose during healing.
