Hair Transplant can Restore Your Youthful Appearance and Confidence

Hair loss is a common problem that affects both men and women. Despite the myths of baldness being blamed on poor circulation to the scalp, vitamin deficiencies, dandruff, and even excessive hat-wearing, the truth is hair loss is primarily caused by aging, a change in hormones, and a family history of baldness.  Hair loss can also be caused by burns or trauma.

As a rule that’s proven time and time again, the earlier hair loss begins, the more severe the baldness will become.  Enhance your appearance and regain a more youthful looking you by considering a hair transplant today!

Are you a candidate for a Hair Transplant?

Following are some common reasons why you may want to consider hair transplantation:

  • You have a receding hairline
  • Your hair loss is permanent
  • You suffer from male or female pattern baldness and thinning hair
  • Your prefer to avoid wearing a hairpiece or wig
  • Your prefer a permanent solution to hair loss
  • Your hair loss is not a result of medication, stress or medical treatment
  • You have healthy, adequate hair growth at the back and sides of the head to serve as donor areas
  • You understand treatment may take several months to several years

If you are in good health, poise a positive attitude and realistic expectations, then you are most likely a good candidate for this procedure.

Many people who consider hair transplantation also consider Facelift and Facial Fillers. Adjunct procedures may be necessary to achieve your overall goals.

Your Consultation

During your initial consultation, Dr. Shah will take a complete medical history and examine the areas of concern in advance of planning your hair transplant. You will be asked about your desired appearance and any other medical considerations. Dr. Shah will factor in your skin tone, areas of hair loss or thinning, donor sites and what kind of look you are trying to achieve.

This process will help Dr. Shah to better understand your expectations and determine whether they can be realistically achieved. Then, this information will be used to formulate a plan that will obtain the best outcome based on the discussed goals of the procedure.  Dr. Shah and his staff will thoroughly explain the surgical technique and answer any questions on the procedure.

Overview of the Procedure

Your hair transplant will be performed in the Mercy Clinic Medical Spa. Maintaining the integrity of the scalp is the goal with such a delicate and precise procedure. The entire process takes anywhere from 2 to 8 hours to complete depending on how much hair is being transplanted. You can rest comfortably watching movies or working on your iPad while the procedure is being performed. You will need to make arrangements to have a family member or friend drive you to and from the Medical Spa and care for you during the first 24 hours after surgery.

With hair transplantation, hair follicles are moved from adequate areas of hair growth on the head and grafted, or transferred, to the area that is lacking. Local anesthesia will be used in both the donor and recipient areas. The grafts will be removed from the donor area and then transplanted into the bald or thinning areas on your head.

Follicular Unit Grafting | Where are the incisions made?

The hair in every person’s scalp grows in tiny bundles called follicular units. The follicular unit includes:

  • 1 to  4 terminal follicles – full thick hair
  • 1 to 2 vellus follicles – very fine hair that has little cosmetic significance
  • sebaceous (oil) glands
  • a tiny vestigial muscle
  • small blood vessels
  • tiny nerves
  • perifollicular - a fine band of collagen that surrounds the follicular unit

When genetic balding is present in areas of the scalp, the healthy terminal hairs are gradually replaced by hairs with smaller diameter and length called “miniaturized” hairs.  With Follicular Unit Grafting, it is important to keep the follicular unit intact to ensure maximum hair growth.  Follicular Unit Transplantation is when hair is transplanted from the permanent zone in the back of the scalp (surrounding the head) into the areas affected by genetic balding using the naturally occurring individual follicular units.

Dr. Shah uses the Single Strip Harvesting technique in order to remove the Follicular Units from the back of the scalp without damaging them. This technique is essential in follicular unit transplantation as it removes the donor tissue in one piece preserving the follicular units and prevents damage to the individual hair follicles. Another major advantage of follicular unit transplantation is the ability to use small recipient sites. Grafts comprised of individual follicular units are small because follicular units themselves are small.  Using a microscope, follicular unit grafts are inserted into tiny needle-sized sites in the recipient area which heals in just a few days without leaving any marks. With Single Strip Harvesting, after the donor strip is removed the wound edges are closed leaving a fine, hairline scar that will be undetectable even if you wear your hair relatively short.

Dr. Shah will determine where to remove the hair follicle units for transplantation after assessing your hair. The results ultimately achieve a natural looking and balanced head of hair.

Follicular Unit Extraction | No Linear Scar - No Stitches

Dr. Shah also offers Follicular Unit Extraction, a state-of-the-art minimally invasive hair transplantation procedure.  With Follicular Unit Extraction, the donor area is trimmed short to allow for optimal visualization of the scalp.  A precise instrument makes tiny circles around the follicular unit and removes the grafts from the donor site.  These grafts are then strategically placed on the balding or thinning areas of the scalp to give natural-looking results. The tiny incisions to the donor site do not require stitches, heal quickly, usually within 5-7 days and are barely detectable.

Benefits of Follicular Unit Extraction

  • Minimally Invasive Technique
  • No stitches, No linear scar
  • Fast recovery
  • Ideal for patients who already wear their hair short in the back
  • Easily disguisable for patients with longer hair

Hair Transplant Recovery

After your hair transplant procedure, you will experience temporary redness, swelling, and some discomfort and tightness for the first day or two. The area will be bandaged for comfort and support and is typically removed one day later. You will be up and moving around the night of your procedure. You are not on bed rest.  You may gently wash your hair 48 hours after your procedure. Scabbing in the transplanted area is also very common and can be visible during the first week after the procedure. Most people return to work within 1 to 3 days after the procedure.  Remember it is normal for the newly transplanted hair follicles to shed the hair 3-4 weeks after the procedure. This allows for new hair growth. You can expect about a ¼” to ½” of hair growth per month.

Dr. Shah and his staff will closely monitor your progress by providing specific postoperative care instructions and schedule a follow-up visit to the office to ensure a smooth healing and recovery. Dr. Shah recommends low-level laser therapy using the Capillus Cap after your procedure to aid in hair growth.
