Gynecomastia Surgery: Male Breast Reduction Performed by a Board-Certified Plastic Surgeon
Male Breast Reduction, also known as gynecomastia surgery, is the surgical correction of over-developed or enlarged breasts in men. This common condition can occur at any age resulting from hormonal changes, heredity, obesity or the use of certain drugs.
Are you a candidate for a male breast reduction?
Candidates include men where:
- The breasts have excess skin
- The breast development has stabilized
- The enlarged breast causes physical discomfort
- The breasts are over-developed, enlarged and droopy
- The condition leaves your overall body disproportionate in size
- The breasts have excess localized fat and excess glandular tissue development
- The condition cannot be corrected through exercise or alternative medical treatments
If you are in good health, poise a positive attitude and realistic expectations, then you are most likely a good candidate for this procedure.
To improve body contour, Liposuction may be recommended depending on the condition. Adjunct procedures may be necessary to achieve your overall goals.
During your initial consultation, Dr. Shah will take a complete medical history and examine the areas of concern in advance of planning your breast reduction. You will be asked about your desired appearance and any other medical considerations. Dr. Shah will factor in your skin tone, degree of loose skin, amount of fat and what kind of look you are trying to achieve.
This process will help Dr. Shah to better understand your expectations and determine whether they can be realistically achieved. Then, this information will be used to formulate a surgical plan that will obtain the best outcome based on the discussed goals of the procedure. Dr. Shah will select the surgical technique that will offer the lowest risk with maximum results. Both Dr. Shah and his staff will thoroughly explain the surgical technique and answer any questions on the procedure.
Overview of the Procedure
Your breast reduction surgery will be performed in one of our fully accredited surgical facilities. The procedure takes 1 to 3 hours to complete. You will need to make arrangements to have a family member or friend drive you to and from the surgery center and care for you during the first 24 hours after surgery.
The goal of male breast reduction surgery is to restore a normal male breast contour and to correct deformities of the breast, nipple or areola. Dr. Shah may select liposuction, excision (surgical removal of breast tissue or excess skin) or a combination of both approaches depending on your condition. With liposuction, Dr. Shah will make a tiny puncture in the skin and insert the liposuction cannula. The cannula looks like a small wand, which he will move back and forth beneath the skin to target unwanted fat deposits which is then suctioned out. Glandular tissue is much denser than fatty tissue and is not appropriate for liposuction, in which case excision is required. Excision is also necessary if a puffy areola will be reduced or the nipple will be repositioned to a more natural male contour.
Where are the incisions made?
The options for the incision area will be determined by the amount of breast tissue you have, elasticity of your skin, and extent of excess skin to be removed if necessary. Dr. Shah will determine the incision pattern and length to perform based on your anatomy, location area of concern and preferences.
Small incisions are required for liposuction and are placed in hard to see areas on and around the chest. If surgical excision is required, the incision is commonly made under the areola. Although the scars from these incisions are permanent, in most cases they will fade and significantly improve over time. Dr. Shah and his staff will help you take care of your scars to have the best result possible.
After your breast reduction surgery, the incision is closed with stitches and steri-strips are placed over the incisions. With all liposuction procedures you will need to wear a compression garment for 2 weeks after surgery to aid in healing, comfort and support during your recovery. We recommend Under Armour compression wear shirts to be worn 24 hours after surgery and to continue 2 weeks after your procedure. This will help you achieve the best results after your procedure. You will be up and moving around the day of your procedure to speed healing. You will have a 20 lb. weight restriction for 2 weeks after surgery. You will be able to resume normal activities 2 weeks after your procedure. It is recommended to start slow and gradually work up to your normal exercise routine.
Dr. Shah and his staff will closely monitor your progress by providing specific postoperative care instructions and schedule a follow up visit to the office to ensure a smooth healing and recovery.
When will you see results?
You’ll see immediate results once the swelling subsides. The final results and dramatic contour improvements will be revealed over the next 2 to 4 months as your breasts configure to the desired new normal. By eating a healthy diet with regular exercise, you should be able to maintain your new harmonious look.
