These pockets of fat in the lower face and neck region can eventually lead to the development of a double chin, jowls, and poor jaw definition. While many people try to address lower face and neck fat through diet and exercise, it is often not effective on its own. For this reason, liposuction surgery of the lower face and neck is a beneficial option for many patients.

Who is a candidate for facial liposuction?

The overall goal of all liposuction surgeries is to remove excess fat from the body. However, the procedure is not designed to address cosmetic concerns in regards to excess, loose, or sagging skin. As such, the ideal lower facial liposuction candidates will have good skin tone and elasticity in the face and neck region. Patients that want to treat loose skin in this region can benefit from a neck lift procedure, either as a substitution or as a complementary procedure to be performed in tandem with their facial liposuction.

    What is Facial Liposuction?

Facial liposuction is a surgical procedure that aims to remove excess fat from the lower face and neck region, resulting in a more youthful facial aesthetic that is more well-defined and has better contours.

Facial liposuction utilizes suction to extract unwanted fat from areas under the skin. A suction syringe or pump is employed to extract fat cells. While this technique was originally intended for body contouring, in recent years, it has become more and more popular as a method of addressing the face and neck region. Facial liposuction patients end up with more youthful facial contours that boost their self-esteem by making them feel more attractive.

    What is the procedure like?

The amount of fat extracted during the liposuction surgery will vary depending on the patient’s unique facial features and aesthetic goals. During the first consultation, a thorough assessment will be performed in order to make the best recommendations for treatment. An individualized treatment plan will be curated to achieve the patient’s facial revitalization goals.

During the procedure, small incisions are made under the chin and right behind the ears. Then, the fat is saturated with a tumescent solution, numbing the fat and preparing it for extraction. A small, cylindrical surgical instrument called a microcannula is then used to suction out the unwanted fat from the treatment area. Patients find that it is a surprisingly comfortable process. In many cases, only local anesthesia is required to perform this treatment.

    What is the recovery like?

Once the lower liposuction procedure is complete, the treatment area is wrapped up with gauze, providing the patient with a soft facial compress to ensure ideal skin contraction and reduce any swelling that may occur throughout the healing process. This compression garment usually only needs to be worn for the first three days following the procedure, and the swelling is relatively mild.

Many patients undergo this procedure at the end of the work week and return to their normal schedule the following Monday. Minimal swelling means that it will be hard to tell that the patient has had any work done. As the incisions heal over several weeks time, the patient’s improved, tighter facial contours will be revealed.
