Along with Dr. Shah, leaders and members of highly-revered organizations such as the American Board of Hair Restoration Surgery and the International Society of Hair Restoration Surgery have all embraced low level light therepy as a powerful means of fighting hair loss.

Who Is A Candidate For Low Level Light Therapy?

Virtually all patients who are struggling with hair loss are considered to be good candidates for low level light therapy. Nonetheless, it is worth mentioning that patients who are in the early stages of hair loss (the first 7 years) respond most efficiently to the treatment.

What Is Low Level Light Therapy?

Low-level laser therapy, also referred to as photobiomodulation (PBMT), cold laser therapy, low-intensity light therapy, and soft laser therapy, is a medicinal technique in which low-level lasers or light-emitting diodes (LEDs) are applied to the surface level of the body. While high-power lasers can be used to perforate or destroy tissue, applying low-power lasers has been shown to relieve pain and stimulate cell function.

The desired effect can be achieved, provided that the wavelengths of the light are kept in the correct range. When low-level light therapy is applied at too low of a dosage and range, it is not effective. As long as the adequate intensity and duration of treatment are chosen, red light therapy can decrease oxidative stress levels and improve the metabolism of multiple cells. Additionally, any existing inflammation is greatly reduced.

How Does The Procedure Work?

Once the headgear is turned on, the scalp is illuminated with red laser light. The red light stimulates an enzyme known as cytochrome c oxidase within the mitochondria. As a result, the mitochondria create more ATP (Adenosine Triphosphate), a form of energy. This influx of energy allows the body to start repairing tissue damage and send essential nutrients to the hair follicles.

Another effect of red light is vasodilation, or expansion of the blood vessels. This leads to increased blood flow throughout the scalp. The improved blood flow combined with the boost in ATP production gives the hair follicles everything they need to produce healthy hair.
