Is IPL Painful?

Patients compare IPL treatment to the feeling of being snapped with a rubber band. Before the procedure, the treatment area is cleansed, and a cool gel is applied to the skin. We will give you eye shields to protect your eyes. The doctor uses an IPL device to deliver light pulses to your skin. The procedure typically takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes. For optimal results, you may need a series of 3 to 6 treatments spaced approximately one month apart to allow your skin to heal.

Noninvasive Treatment with No Recovery Time

You should be able to return to your normal activities immediately after IPL. The treatment area may be red and sensitive for a few hours (similar to a sunburn) and you may experience slight swelling. Skin sensitivity will continue for a few days after the procedure. You may need to avoid using hot water until you heal.

How Does IPL Work?

IPL is like laser treatment, except lasers focus one wavelength of light on the skin while IPL releases many different wavelengths. The light is less focused and more scattered than light from a laser, and it penetrates to the dermis (second layer of skin) without harming the epidermis (outer layer of skin). Pigment in your skin absorbs light energy, which is converted to heat. This destroys unwanted pigment to fade freckles and dark spots. It also destroys hair follicles to prevent unwanted hair growth. IPL causes less damage to the skin than laser treatment.

What Are the Benefits of Intense Pulsed Light Therapy?

  • IPL, also known as photo rejuvenation, combats the effects of aging by dissolving discolored cells deep in the dermis and generating new collagen production for stronger, more supple skin.
  • IPL kills harmful bacteria that cause acne, reduces redness and inflammation, and gradually helps minimize scar tissue.
  • Because intense pulsed light is absorbed by red blood cells, this treatment is effective for visible blood vessel abnormalities such as broken capillaries and spider veins.
  • Treatment is quick, convenient, and well tolerated.
  • Regular photo facials can help prevent premature aging. IPL has a unique, rejuvenating effect on skin cells.
  • IPL can be performed on the face, neck, upper chest, shoulders, arms, hands, and legs.
  • Photo facials can be combined with other nonsurgical treatments, such as BOTOX® and dermal fillers.
  • IPL is powerful enough to treat deeper layers of the dermis but gentle enough not to require downtime.
