Do BOTOX Injections Hurt?

More than four million botulinum toxin type A treatments were performed in 2020, as reported by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS). BOTOX was the number one cosmetic minimally invasive procedure in the U.S.

Injections are quick, safe, and effective, and typically performed in 20 minutes or less. Many patients report that BOTOX injections feel like a pinch. This is what to expect:

  • Your injector carefully identifies and marks the treatment areas
  • A mild cleanser is applied
  • Ice or numbing cream may be used on the targeted areas if you are concerned with discomfort
  • Your injector uses a fine needle to inject BOTOX directly into facial muscles. Several injections are usually required
  • Ice and pressure are applied to the treatment areas to minimize swelling

Look Younger and Refreshed with No Downtime

BOTOX injections require little or no downtime. You can return to normal activities immediately after treatment. You will receive specific aftercare instructions when your injections are complete. We do ask that you avoid rubbing treated areas to reduce the risk of spreading the BOTOX.

How many injections will I need in a treatment session?

BOTOX treatment is individually tailored to your unique needs and aesthetic goals. The number of injections you require will depend on the number of treatment areas:

  • For frown lines between the eyes, you will need five injections into the muscles between the brows and in the forehead.
  • For lines on the forehead, your injections will vary depending on the severity of your lines.
  • For crow’s feet, you will need an injection in three different areas of the muscle that frames the side of the eye, and three more injections for the other eye.

How does BOTOX work to minimize wrinkles?

Botulinum toxin targets muscles that repeatedly contract, causing frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet. When injected into these muscles, BOTOX temporarily reduces their activity. This results in visible smoothing of facial wrinkles and lines.

Should I wait until a certain age to start BOTOX injections?

Severity of facial lines, not age, is the determining factor in when to start BOTOX treatment. Women and men in their early 30s opt for BOTOX and other injectable treatments. Lines form differently on different people, and the timing can be affected by a variety of factors, including environmental free radical damage and sun damage.

How important is injector skill with BOTOX treatments?

Like other injectable treatments, BOTOX is technique sensitive. When delivered by an expert, trained injector, it produces subtle, natural-looking results. You should look like yourself — with less noticeable frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead wrinkles.
