What is the Procedure?

Rhinoplasty is usually performed under general anesthesia. Once you’re sedated, incisions are made through which the restructuring can be performed.

An open rhinoplasty involves placing an incision at the base of the columella (the strip of tissue between the nostrils). For minor changes, a closed rhinoplasty can be performed with the incisions inside the nostrils, with no visible scars.

However, even with the open rhinoplasty approach, the scar is tiny and hidden beneath the nose structure and virtually invisible once healed. Your custom surgical plan may involve removing excess cartilage and bone or grafting cartilage to build up a nose bridge. Once the structure is corrected (which could include septoplasty to straighten the inner structure for healthy breathing) the incisions are closed, the nose is bandaged, and the surgery is complete.

Your Aftercare Experience: Recovery at Home

The length of the surgery varies but is typically several hours. When you awaken from surgery, you will be released to return home to rest, under the care of another adult. You will have pain medication to keep you comfortable. Dr. Shah and his team provide comprehensive aftercare and will be monitoring every step of your recovery, and you will have several in-office follow-up appointments.

What are the potential risks and complications of rhinoplasty?

Can rhinoplasty address both cosmetic and functional issues?

Yes, rhinoplasty can address both cosmetic concerns, such as altering the shape and appearance of the nose, and functional issues, such as improving breathing difficulties due to a deviated septum or other nasal structural problems.

When will I see the final results of rhinoplasty?

While noticeable changes can be seen once the initial swelling subsides, it can take several months for the final results of rhinoplasty to fully develop. The nose will continue to refine and settle into its new shape over the course of a year or more.

Are there non-surgical alternatives to rhinoplasty?

Non-surgical rhinoplasty, using injectable fillers, is an option for individuals looking to make minor adjustments to the appearance of their nose without undergoing surgery. However, this option is temporary and is limited in terms of the changes it can achieve.

What are the potential risks and complications of rhinoplasty?

Risks of rhinoplasty include infection, bleeding, scarring, poor wound healing, asymmetry, and dissatisfaction with the results. It's important to choose a skilled and experienced plastic surgeon to minimize these risks.
